River Oaks Faculty & Staff Bios

Administration
Carolyn Younce has a BS degree in art, a MS degree in special education, and certification in instructional supervision and school administration from East Carolina University. She has been an educator at the elementary, middle, and high school levels for 32 years, the last 16 of which have been with WCPSS.
Delvin Vick is a product of the Wake County Public Schools System. He graduated from East Carolina University with a BS in elementary education. He taught internationally in Japan before returning to Wake County. After several years in the classroom, he earned a master's degree in school administration and supervision from North Carolina Central University and is now pursuing a doctoral degree in educational leadership.
Faculty/Staff
6th Grade
Sharie Birdt has a B.S. in early childhood education from Queens College and a M.S.Ed in Special Education from Brooklyn College.  She has 25+ years of teaching experience mostly working with "at risk" students and the special education population. 
Samantha Wilson holds an Associate in Arts from Coastal Carolina, Bachelor in Science from Indiana University, and is two classes away from completing a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from University of Phoenix. She is continuing professional development through National Boards Certification. She taught all core subjects in a Yupik Eskimos village in Alaska and has spent the last four years at ROMS.  She states that she, "...enjoys bringing a lot of experiences into the classroom having lived all over the United States and in Japan." She teaches in both the Booster Program and regular ROMS program. She enjoys being the mother of teenagers and volunteering for the WF Boys and Girls Club.

Jennifer Costin
Lynne Petersen teaches 7th grade science.  She is a graduate from University of North Carolina at Wilmington and holds a degree in psychology.  She previously taught special education in Wake County at the middle school and high school level.  She is certified to teach middle school science, math, and special education.  Lynne is Nationally Board Certified and is currently pursuing her master's degree at UNC. 
Lynn Lye has 24 years of teaching experience in the WCPSS.  Her previous teaching assignments have been Wake Forest - Rolesville Middle School, Carnage Middle School, Enloe High School and Zebulon Middle School.
8th Grade
Denise Cruz
Linda Jenkins graduated from Lesley University with a dual degree which includes a BS in Middle School Education along with a BS in Special Education.  As a result, she has been fortunate to teach in a variety of settings and school systems.  She currently teaches 8th grade Language Arts at River Oaks Middle School.  She states, "I'm so thankful for all of the rich experiences I have had throughout my career and the amazing educators with whom I have worked.  All of it has helped me fill my bag of tricks, and I pull from that bag everyday to keep my students motivated to be successful."

Jennifer Wright graduated from SUNY College at Fredonia, BS in Elementary Education with a concentration in Social Studies. Obtained Middle School Mathematics Certification through completion of Praxis II exam and additional college level math courses.

She taught Substitute Effective Teacher Training for Wake Technical Community College (for adults); as an evening class. She has had the opportunity to teach in a wide variety of situations, all of which has provided her a rich background of resources that support her teaching at River Oaks.

She states, "Having taught Special Education for Kindergarten through 6th grade in Vance County, 4th grade (also in Vance County), 6th grade Math at Davis Dr. Middle (Wake County), and ALP Math at East Wake Middle (Wake County), it's a pleasure to put these years of teaching all grade levels, K-8, to good use in my current position."

Joel Young is the 8th grade Social Studies teacher at River Oaks Middle School.  He graduated from Saint Louis University with a Bachelors degree in Education.

He taught in Missouri for four years and North Carolina for three. In his B.C. years, (before two beautiful children), he enjoyed games of strategy, Tae Kwon Do, swimming and reading.  Now much of his time is spent raising two chinchillas and trying to decide if his beard should stay or go.

Booster Program
Jennifer Clifton received he Bachelor's degree in Art History from Florida State in 1990. She then taught third grade and art in New Orleans before returning to graduate schoool. She earned her Master's degree in Counselor Education at NC State in 1997. Jennifer has been a Middle School Guidance Counselor in Wake County for twelve years. She is excited about working as a counselor with the first group of Booster students at River Oaks Middle School.
Carolyn Motague has a Bachelor of Science degree from St. Augustine's College in Raleigh, NC. She has many years of teaching experience from Nash County and Wake County in teaching math and science. She is currently the math teacher for the Booster program.
Michelle Von Hoene earned a B.A. in English Education and a Master of Education degree from North Carolina State University. She has taught 8th, 9th, and 10th grade English courses in Wake County Schools and English courses at Wake Technical Community College. She is a National Board Certified Teacher in Early Adolescence/English Language Arts.

Support Staff & Specialists
Najla Abdullah
Beth Averette has a BA in physical education from St. Andrews College where she played basketball and tennis. She has taught healthful living and coached in Wake County for 6 years.
Daniel G. Craven holds a B.A. in Psychology from Hartwick College and an M.Ed. in School Counseling from SUNY Oneonta. He played football in college for four years and acted as a collegiate football coach. He is a local high school football coach. Mr. Craven moved to Raleigh 5 years ago from upstate NY. He spent his winter semesters in college traveling to France, Jamaica, Austria, the Czech Republic, and Holland. He enjoys football, chess, mentoring youths, and time with his family; especially with his newborn daughter.
Ryan Dozier
Alteric Dunston is a product of Wake County Public Schools (Fuquay-Varina area) .   He attended North Carolina A & T State University, where he received a B.S. in Marketing.   After working in the private sector for a few years, he went back to school to obtaining his teaching credentials at North Carolina State University where he received his certification in Business and Marketing Education grades 6-12.   He is currently working on Master’s in School Administration at North Carolina Central University.   Outside of work, He stays busy with Flag football, Xbox, fraternity work, and spending time with his family.
Yolanda McLemore earned an Associate Degree in Human Services from Middlesex Community Technical College, CT, Bachelor of Science in Social Work from Saint Joseph College in West Hartford, CT, Master of Social Work from Fordham University, NY., Licensed Clinical Social Worker with the State of NC., 8 Years Experience as a Clinician, 6 years as a WCPSS Certified School Social Worker.
Roxane Neal
Sandra Solomon earned a BS in Education from East Carolina University and a MLS from North Carolina Central University. She previously taught middle school Language Arts, coordinated the competency program for the Wake County optional high schools, and was site coordinator for Community in Schools volunteers. She currently serves as media specialist and tech contact for River Oaks Middle and Mt. Vernon School.

River Oaks Rams
Lynne Petersen has been selected as the River Oaks Middle School Teacher of the Year. She will represent us in the 2010-11 competetion for WCPSS.

River Oaks Middle School receives notification of "Model School" status from Positive Behavior Support annual evaluation.
