General Information

Mission

The mission of River Oaks Middle School is to equip our students with the academic and relational tools necessary to be successful in school.

Who we serve

River Oaks serves at-risk students who are not experiencing adequate success in their base schools.  Students referred to River Oaks often are failing academically.  They also may demonstrate some behavioral difficulties in their base school.  These difficulties are usually of a playful nature and occur most often during the unstructured times and areas at the base school.  Students who benefit from River Oaks have demonstrated a history of building some positive relationships with adults in their schools and demonstrate a desire to improve their circumstances.

Criteria for referral/admission

All students should go through the SST process prior to being referred to River Oaks.  If students are suspected of having special education needs, this referral and subsequent evaluation should occur prior to a River Oaks referral.   Once SST has determined that a River Oaks referral is appropriate, the referral packet is submitted to our school.  At that point River Oaks will schedule an intake session with the base school to discuss and review the referral and identify goals and objectives upon acceptance.  If accepted, students are scheduled for an orientation/admission session within one week.  The student’s parent is required to attend the orientation/admission session.

Services Available

Our school emphasizes strengthening basic academic skills.  The following courses are individualized to meet the needs of each student:  Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Health & PE, Technology, and Pre-Vocational education.  Academic remediation is available for students in the areas of Math and Reading.  Student-to-teacher ratio is no more than 10:1.  In addition to teaching staff, River Oaks has a full-time principal, counselor, social worker, and two office support staff.  We are a Positive Behavior Support school and use a contingency management system that is designed to allow students various privileges and rewards based on a point system.

Support Services for Returning Students

Once accepted, students are admitted to attend River Oaks for the remainder of that school year.  Often students are encouraged to return to their base school for the next year.  Transition meetings are scheduled one week after the end of the school year.  At that time River Oaks staff meets with base school representatives to discuss the students progress and plan for the students placement during the next school year.  If students have been responsive to River Oaks as an intervention, they are often allowed to return to our school if problems re-occur after returning to their base school.
